Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi called the police to report a burglary at his home before realising it was just very messy.

The 27-year-old thought thieves had broken in to his £500,000 house in the city's Jesmond district.

He phoned police and detailed several items that were missing. A police source told the Daily Mirror: "We were told thieves had taken a number of things, the most important one being the chequebook.

"Given what soccer stars earn, that was obviously a matter of great concern."

However, Ameobi subsequently admitted his mistake and found the 'stolen' items amid household clutter.

Nice to know that if ever my house is broken into, and my chequebook is stolen, they will ignore it totally. Shouldn't we all be treated equal? guess not.

Strange also, coz do you know anywhere which still takes cheques even?. So my from this I deduce that the police priority is:-

No1 Catching speeding motorists
No2 Looking for lost footballers cheqebooks?

From which I read that it was a matter of great concern to the owner of the chequebook, given that he is wealthy and could conceivably see large sums of money disappear from his account. That's not to say that you or I wouldn't be concerned if our chequebook went missing, but there is no evidence to suggest that the police wouldn't investigate a burglary if it happened to the OP, which is what he's implying.

I just bought a loft ladder using a cheque. Had I known that Amiobi was a veritable moron, I'd have nicked it from the back of his chequebook.

Firstly, it's football, not soccer.
