Quick help - Luxembourg

Is it worth visiting? Driving back to Munich from Blighty at 5am tomorrow and was contemplating spending a night enroute in a nice part of Europe. Luxembourg was mentioned. now, my question to the many traveled and learned people of Pistonia is.

Is it worth it? Whats there to see?

or, where else shall we go en-route.

I would say the ring but i presume there isnt muh around it to see.

Help is greatly appreciated.

I'd say go to Koblenz instead. Much more scenic. Luxembourg is something of nothing. If you want to give the German grub a miss there's a decent curry house in Koblenz too, the Taj Mahal.

Luxembourg actually has a number of lovely driving roads. Well maintained, light traffic, plenty of bends and elevation changes, no cameras, etc. The main problem is that the place is small.
This time of year, however, it's fairly irrelevant, because of the weather.

Worth a stop for the cheap fuel....

Personally I'd rather stop in Trier. Not much going on there but pleasant enough, unlike the sthole that is Lux city (ok so I had a bad experience there).

I liked Luxembourg. It is small, but the fuel is cheap, the roads are stunning and the traffic is non-existent. Food's good, too.

What's not to like? (Stay out of the city, I agree, that's pretty crap ... the countryside is great though.)

I stayed in Trier once.
Although it's not that large a place, it took me two hours to locate my hotel, despite my having a map. When I had made the booking, the staff had failed to mention that the hotel had recently been renamed.

IIRC - cheapest diesel in Europe

If leaving Munich at 0500 you should be in Calais by 1100 anyway ....

You going to be heading back to Munich? If so, save the day up and make a little trip of the journey back with 2 or 3 stops!

For the question, Luxembourg is very pleasant, nice walk around the roman walls, or up to the viaduct, some nice bars and cafe's, and some lovely roads!

As the smallest member of BeNeLux, they definitely got ALL the hills

I spent some time there about 11 years ago.
The police don't seem to care about how fast you drive.
We passed them doing about 220kph while racing a german golf and they did nothing.

But if you go out drinking beware German transvestites.
Very convincing apart from the beards.

I went to Luxembourg this summer. It's an interesting place and worth a look at, if nothing else to give you perspective on why the EU has a very rosy view on everything.

We stayed at the Novotel opposite the EU commission. There were two gold high rise buildings being built opposite and the road was freshly tarmaced. We were there on a Saturday and there was no traffic. Down the road was a shoping mall that had 'everything'. The town has a lot of nice old buildings and is absolutely immaculate. You can drive around the city and see the natural fortification it enjoyed in a morning.

The roads were much like those of Belgium, good to drive on. Fuel was cheap for Europe, about E1.37 / litre vs E1.59 in France & Belgium.

Back to the point about the EU having a rosy view, if this was the result of the EU wouldn't you think it was a jolly good thing if you lived there? I do.

6 hours? - Er, I don't think so. It's around 650 miles (1000 km) from Munich to Calais, you'd have to be doing around an average of around 110mph which you won't be able to do. What about fuels stops? Rest/food Stops? Traffic? Speed limited areas ofthe Autobahn? Road works? Weather?. It's more like a minimum of 8 hours but I would leave 9-10 hours to be on the safe side.

Lived in Munich for over a year and used to regularly drive back to London for weekends. OK this was back in late 90's but certainly used to regularly do that. Calais to Strasbourg to Munich which is 900km ... ok so give or take about half an hour and we did usually do the trip through the night, but given that i used to cruise on the autobahns at 220kph .... (and the autoroutes at not much less )
