Club Med Hammamet, Tunisia - anyone been?

Tunisia is a s
thole and the locals are all pikey bds who will beg and hassle you everytime you leave the hotel.
Beautiful country once you get outside the towns and some of the people (1 in 50-100) are great.
Just speaking from my experience of when we went there, not sure what Hammamet is like though. We visited Sousse about 13 months ago.

I was there last year with my wife and two year old son and we really enjoyed it. Very surprised by the previous post. Weather was great, pool and beach lovely, food was very good for a buffet and the facilities were spot-on. The only downside is that most of the guests are french and the staff do not have great English but still we were understood. The staff were friendly, hotel was bright, clean and in good condition. Outside was a different story which was why we didnt venture outside the hotel. Tunisia bit of a dump really.

How can you be surprised which what we write if you didn't venture outside of the hotel? I'd probably enjoy Baghdad if there was a nice enough hotel there that I never had to leave for the duration of my stay.

Thanks. Tripadvisor is usually pretty good at giving an unbiased view (if you ignore the complete moaners, and over the top happy people!). Out of 12 reviews for this place only 2 were in english, and both were very happy campers.

Not sure about now but we went about 10 years ago.
Service at the hotel was exceptional, staff extremely helpful and friendly.
(This was only a cheapy, yet the only place where they take your bags and unpack whilst you have a drink! Packed on way home too, well worth a few Dinar tip).
Outside of hotel locals were friendly and although pushy nothing like as bad as Egypt or Turkey.
Only bad point we found was it was full of Germans, seems it was a top destination for pikey Germans, real chav ones not the usual towel placers.

Agree with the majority - Tunisia is a horrible dirty st hole if you venture outside of the hotel. Theft, beggars, pikies, it's got it all. I had to physically throw one chap out of the way as he wouldn't let my wife and I pass until I'd bought something. This was after politely telling him for about 3 minutes that I wasn't interested. Imagine this occurring every 10 metres in the towns.
The roads are also as dangerous as hell.
Countryside is beautiful though, but not worth the other hassles IMHO.
Be careful when you go though, we went late in the season, and although the Hotel was nice, all the interesting all inclusive facilities - sailing, archery, etc - were not available.
Worth a punt if you don't plan on leaving the hotel ever, avoid like the plague if you do.

Been to Tunisia twice and loved it.
Stayed in Monistir the first time, amazing beaches, warm clear waters. The people are amazing, yes there are beggers in the cities and everyone hassles you in the souks. If you don't want that side, don't venture further than the boundries of the resort.
Second time went to Port El Kantaoui and had a great time going on tours out the bedoin caves (star wars locale etc) and to an old roman colluseum.
Tunisia is great country and well worth a look, if you are used to nice western holidays then it may be a culture shock tho.

It is unlikely that we will venture out much (if at all), so the club itself and the beach is definitely the most important thing.
We have travelled in Malaysia/ Bali/ Thailand and just like many locations there, I imagine the hawkers (
) can be a right pain in the backside.
Any other views on the Club Med village???
