I bought one last year to have a play with. The thing with them is you need to memorise the turns (algorithms) required to move the pieces around without messing up parts already completed. Once you know these it's easy, but obviously learning them correctly is quite difficult. I don't think you get anywhere by just playing around with it, you need a system for moving the colours around.
The best tip is to start with the edges and corners as these obviously can only go correctly in one place, having more than one colour on the block.
