Ebay have screwed it up by turning it into a just another shop for traders. When I search now I turn off the traders. In the old days....sighs...there were real bargains out there and it was fun. There still are some great deals to be had....especially on motors...but you have to get through all the mince first.
I've seen people bid on stuff for more money than you can buy the bloody thing new.
But it is addictive and I love it in a strange kinda way....infact I'm off there now..

The service - Ebay is a completely faceless company. They are absolutely awful at sorting out disputes. I have NEVER spoken to anyone who works for it.
PayPal - Always sides with the buyer over the most trivial issues. Happy to charge you double, once for selling and once for using paypal.
The end result of my experiences with ebay and paypal led to me cancelling my paypal account, refusing to sell anything else on there and only buying goods that were worth very little or could not 'go wrong.'
Ebay REALLY needs a competitor to force it to return to what it once was. It's currently loaded with scamming feckwits, run by scamming feckwits.

I would really love to have the computer know how to setup a competitor where every memeber has to go through checks like Experian to keep the quality of the members high. My experience of Ebay here....

Mark. What would you suggest to weed out the rabble then? As i see it the problem with checks like experian is it will weed out a lot of people who are perfectly ok and to a degree i would say the backbone of what ebay was.
I gave up selling when everything I tried to sell got a silly bid placed on it in the last second. Like £5000 for a £100 at best mobile phone. Absolutely pointless using it when that happens every time.
Buying things has been ok. Particularly from E-Bay stores. But the odd individual as well.

Dislikes:
Buyers not turning up/paying for high value items eg cars, needs a deposit system to work well.
Feedback system is now totally pointless may as well bin it & guess
Extortionate fees plus Paypal fees
Far too much tat from traders clogging up the system & finds

too easy for a buyer to recieve the goods perfectly then raise a claim with paypal and get a virtually automatic refund (out of pocket and no goods).
takes an eternity to list stuff thanks to thier "helpful" wizards, plugins, applets etc.
too many dodgey/timewasting bids
They need to set up a separate site for traders and people genuinely selling unwanted stuff.
If it was all just preowned stuff then I would bid a lot more, at the moment its just flooded with multiples of the same auctions by traders. A separate site for traders perhaps?
They need to bloody well sort Paypal out. It's a good idea but they are basically ripping people off, and not sorting out disputes properly. Having it registered as a proper bank in each of the countries it operates in would sort out a lot of it, as it would be regulated, at the moment theres not much legislation governing it. Just recently I sold something on ebay, it was £15 incl P+P, now the transaction has been reversed, no dispute with seller, no contact from Paypal except for a short email after they'd done it, no explanation... Leaves you feeling powerless and frustrated.
A British call centre and real replies to email from real people would be a good start. They need to instill confidence in the customer base. I'm currently on the verge of cancelling my account.
Some measures to cut down on fraud, such as registration only with a bank account (and the details of this account could not be accessed once registered, in case of account theft), and letters sent to an address with codes (to verify an address) for both buyers and sellers.
And recently I was thinking about the possibility of listing things without an auction, just with a price or where buyers can offer for it. It means that I might have something that may not find any bidders in a week (A part for a rare car, for example) but if left on for a few months someone may find it and offer me for it/click buy it now for it. Sellers would be emailed periodically to check they still have it and click to confirm this, if no click then it is taken off, so that people don't clog up system with items that they dont have or forget about etc. Can you do this currently with ebay shops?

Oh and a spell check, perhaps automatically, on the listing page.
Perhaps a system where cash is deposited to ebay/paypal before bid so small items can be automatically paid for and big ones a deposit is paid, so sellers don't end up out of pocket with timewaster buyers. Just an idea, I can see downsides to it, maybe just for new users?
