Private Detectives / Investigators - anyone used them?

I have. Nothing domestic before the questions start!

I was defrauded a few years back and used both a private detective and, separately, a large organisation who call themselves a 'risk consulting company' who provide everything from private detectives to personal protection.

Oh... thoughts/experiences/costs

Interesting results from the small operator, not much from the bigger company. Not cheap.
