Swindon to Lake District/Yorkshire Dales

I'm off to the Lake District tomorrow and Yorkshire dales the next day. Is there anywhere people would recommend going to? (Especially around Lake District/Yorkshire Dales, or on the way up from Swindon)

Well, I'd like to visit some nice picturesque places for some photos, maybe somewhere with a nice backdrop for some car pics, but not bothered about a hoon with this weather.
I'd like somewhere nice to walk too.

But, in the event it rains, something else to do too. Also need to find somewhere to eat, too.

Well in that case, the weather tomorrow in South Cumbria is supposed to be ok so what you could do is this:

Get off the M6 at j36 and join the A591. Turn off for the A590 after a few miles and follow it though Newby Bridge and then Backbarrow. A few miles before Ulverston there is a turn off signposted Greenodd, Whitehaven, Coniston. Follow this and look out for the turn off for Coniston after a few more miles - its not very obvious.

The Coniston road is quite twisty with low traffic volumes and there isn't any ice at the moment as its too warm. Park in Coniston or follow the route up the hill for 'The old man of Coniston'. Excellent views of Coniston water and if the weather is ok the walk to the top is excellent unless you are very unfit.

Failing that Holker Hall which is off the A590 near Backbarrow has really nice grounds as well as a modest vintage motor museum. This is signposted off the A590 at the point where it is dual carriage way for all of 250 metres.

For somewhere to eat, on your way out of Cumbria when the A590 becomes dual carriage way again, keep an eye out for a signpost for Sizergh Castle / Sizergh Low barn just before the big roundabout for the A591. Turn off here.

After a quarter of a mile you will spy the Strickland Arms. If you get there at lunchtime they do 2 courses for £10, otherwise their food is reasonably priced and very tasty. They do a good selection of Lagers and Beers as well.

If you are going on the A590 towards Barrow, watch out for the speed cameras just past the end of the dual carriageway after Sizergh Castle.

If you're into walking, go along the A65 to Ingleton Falls. Just over 4 miles if you do the complete round trip, waterfalls, woods, deep gorges, i was up there the weekend and it really is worth it.

....as is The Lister Arms in Malham - or the George Inn at Hubberholme - or the Buck at Buckden.
Upper Wharfedale and Langstrothdale are beautiful, but could be a bit gruesome, weather-wise, at this time of year.
