Vote: Should 4x4 drivers pay more to park?

Caution, there may be sarcasm and rhetorical questions...
I have this cunning plan. My plan taxes more heavily for those people with heavy cars and large engines, and those people whose cars have the styling of a barn. Conversely it rewards people who have small cars like the Elise, which are light and efficient. Drive many miles and you pay more. Drive fewer and you pay less. Drive a heavy motor and... Well you get the idea. Drive your 5 litre Griff for, say, 1000 miles a year and pay much less than a rep who does 50,000 in his Vectra! Controversially, I call my plan "fuel tax".
What's that you say? We already pay duty on fuel? Oh, and VAT on the duty? So why the hell do we have this mental road tax scheme with a scale of charges that is supposedly based on how nice it is to the environment?

so you are saying a fiat panda 4x4 should pay more to park than a rolls phantom? The sooner the general public realise 4x4 refers to a drivetrain and is not a type of vehicle the better. Surely vehicle length would be a better method? If you can park within one space you pay for one, if your car spills into two bays then you pay for two. Although this would probably prompt the council to repaint all the spaces smaller so no one fits in just one....

+1, my car is 4x4 and no bigger or more polluting than anyother car.yes they should.
and caravan'ers, they should pay more.
and horse box trailors.
and trailors; all of them.
and buses.
and vans; all of them.
and anyone else who uses my roads on the way to work......
since when did this government action napleon's philosophy on divide and conquer.................
All road uses should pay the same, regardless of engine size, wheel spacing, seats inside. This does also include cyclists.
Get your damn bikes registered with plates and get some tax!
You need to be as accountabile as the motorised users.

However, I notice that the Poll doesn't specifiy WHY 4*4s should pay more to park.
I would love to be able to park right down the white line and pay for two spaces. My sports car is quite small but I'd like to protect it from scratches. But that goes for any vehicle IMHO.

4x4 hatred isn't about the drivetrain or even the size. It's about a rather vulgar and unpleasant case of of envy. The 4x4 is merely a metaphor for "nice, large, car".
If you asked "Should Ferrari and Porsche drivers pay more to park?" More than 50% would think "yes, they should."

I know that when you book on ferries and the chunnel that you have to state if your car / trailer combo is greater / less than 16ft 6". Not sure if this is some official maximum statement for the length of a car before it pays twice, all i know is that the XJS was exactly 16ft 6" long

This is the key. If they park fine they shouldn't pay more, but cross the line and they should.Its down to the swing in the space people. Who wont reverse to straighten up, fine if you can actually swing in and get it right.
