anyone else heard this one?

Was driving south on a1 near cottesmore and the harriers were out playing! Now years ago there was a story about two coppers in the highlands(i think) which involved a harrier.
Apparently the bib were out playing with their radar gun trying to make extra money. Anyways, after about an hour, the gun goes nuts and starts reading speeds of over 300mph before shutting down. Next thing a harrier goes screaming overhead. so, bib complain to the raf, and found out they got of lightly. Apparently, the harrier correctly identified the radar as ahostile threat, then fried it, and if it was armed would have automatically launched at the radar with out pilot intervention!
Anyone heard this before, or is it an urban myth?

Yeah, I heard it but they were supposed to have fired the gun at the plane to see how fast it was moving and set off the self defence systems in the plane which, if it had been carrying sidewinders, would have launched a couple at the offending officers. Probably an urban myth but would be brilliant if it were true!

The Harriers were deployed as we heard a northerner was heading south Apparently the bib were out playing with their radar gun trying to make extra money. Being serious for a minute, do jets actually have a facility whereby if it detects a source that meets a set of criteria, it will assume a lock and fire at the target without the pilot's intervention?
No. Not only is the original post as old as the hills, it's also complete bBeing serious for a minute, do jets actually have a facility whereby if it detects a source that meets a set of criteria, it will assume a lock and fire at the target without the pilot's intervention?

I'm fully aware the story is as old as the hills, and also that in all probability it is b
ks, but I've never heard of the automatic lock & launch before, and was just asking out of idle curiosity.
I'd be very surprised if it was true tho....

Fire what exactly? Harrier based anti-missile missile system? no, only seen FireFox do that..... and then it had to think in Russian....Being serious for a minute, do jets actually have a facility whereby if it detects a source that meets a set of criteria, it will assume a lock and fire at the target without the pilot's intervention?

Im going to say no, I haven't heard of any Iraqi Traffic Police being accidentally killed.Being serious for a minute, do jets actually have a facility whereby if it detects a source that meets a set of criteria, it will assume a lock and fire at the target without the pilot's intervention?
A Skyshadow ECM type package on a Tornado IDS flying with it active into enemy territory would have maybe jammed it.
But a Harrier doesn't have a powerful automated onboard ECM package (does it?) and I don't know what ones they did carry, nor did Sidewinders fire at the floor, nor automatically (they'd shoot each other down all the time, automatically)
Only an ALARM or maybe a HARM would do it, but I've rarely seen Harriers with HARM (maybe the USA equivalent of the Harrier at that), and never with ALARM.
If only the people who made it up actually knew something, it would have been a 'no one knows' but by being clearly totally stupid they made it clearly 'b
ks'
Doh

I can categorically saw the Harrier cannot achieve those speed, as at that velocity the feathers would come off.Apparently the bib were out playing with their radar gun trying to make extra money.
