Best museums/galleries etc. up north?

I got OH's relatives coming over from Italy to stay with us next weekend. I'd like to take them out somewhere for the day on Saturday. It's their second time in the UK, previously they've done a few touristy things in London. This time they'll be staying with us in Yorkshire

They're 2 brothers (her cousins) in their early 20's, both at university at the moment, the outdoors-type from what I hear. I would have taken them to Alton Towers if the weather wasn't so f****** awful.

Perhaps a museum or something of the like? Am based in Leeds and happy to travel up 2hrs in any direction (or even further) if there's any spectacular days out but would prefer to be indoors (there's no particular budget in mind)?

Couple of museums in York, Air Museum at Elvington, Science Museum in Manchester, plus I am sure there is a Lowry gallery in Manchester (or there was)

I went to Alnwick Castle recently and the castle itself was canny - impressed that the owners live in it. The best though was the woman that did the tour showing us around. I've never had a guide before that was so knowledgeable and passionate about their subject. She was telling us the tale of how someone, the Duke of the time, wanted to hook up with some wifey, but because of politics had to marry someone else and she had tears streaming from her eyes as she was talking about the guy's heartache.

It's been years since I've been, but is Beamish still open and decent? There is the North York Moors railway which is always fun. The Jorvick Viking Centre for laughs, though it has a funny smell to it - could be combined with the York Dungeons and followed up with a giant pub crawl around the city. Eden Camp for something war related.

Science and industry museum in Manchester is a fantastic day out, working steam powered mill engines, trains, gas, electric, sewerage areas, cars (not many) and textiles stuff plus the added bonus of the air and space museum right next door.

Loads of other cool stuff in Manchester as well Urbis, Sinclairs (ancient pub!) the Cathedral, Manchester Museum itself etc etc.

Beamish is bigger and better than ever but you really do need at least a full day to get around it without missing out a lot. You could always have an overnight at Durham to enable as early a start as possible.

BTW, I am very proud to say my father was one of the key people in installing and getting the power hall in the science and industry museum up and running on STEAM, no electric mock ups but steam plant running on steam, a massive undertaking back then and a small group of very skilled folk worked wonders on getting that place going.

Railway Museum at York is good and free (I hear that's a yorkshireman's favourite price ), Plus York is a nice day out in a traditional English City. Or run out to Whitby to look at the Abbey, Dracula related stuff and good old fashioned fish'n'chips.

I would say a good bet is the finale of the European Capital Of Culture in Liverpool. Firework display in the middle of the river and lots of stuff going on in the City Centre.
I'm on the riverfront over in Birkenhead and me and Mrs Glocko are going to wrap up well and take a bottle of wine and munchies into the garden to watch.

The Royal Armoury museum thingy in Leeds is very, very good.





It helps if you like shooty or pointy things though.

For a stunning building try the Bowes museum in Barnard Castle. The silver clockwork swan is good (and it might be working too). The rest of the exhibits are less noteworthy however.

You could also try York Minster, the Shambles and the Yorvik centre or the railway museum. From memory there is plenty to see in York. Might be your best bet.
