Microchip Cat Flaps

Does anyone have any experience with either of these microchip reading style of cat flaps?

I would prefer to use the second one as it is battery operated rather than having wires running about but wondered if anyone has used either and had any valid comments on the subject.
We currently have a tag/collar type flap but our cat loses his collar within 24hrs and it is costing us a fortune in tags. Our cat is also a big scaredy cat and hides under the nearest object if one of the local cats comes in to say hello and eat his food.

I got the Sureflap just before Christmas. At first it didn't work because my cat's chip was one of the old types. I had him rechipped but it still wouldn't read his chip until he was halfway through - which kind of defeated the object! I then got a slightly different version of the Sureflap with a longer tunnel, and that now works ok. It took a while for him to get used to using it though, as the click when it unlatched would startle him.

We were told the sureflap wasn't as reliable as the petporte. So we have a pet porte. Works perfectly, but one of our cats is too stupid to work out how to use it.

They look good and I have read the same about it being superior to the sureflap but not sure about the cable round the room or the protruding porch. hmmmm ... technical stuff about cat flaps Bloody animals.

Heh. Clyde can manage a cat flap, but not the fancy one. He bounds up, nuts the catflap, which is locked. He bounces off, and looks confused. The flap then reads the chip in his neck, and clicks open. The click suprises him, and he stares at it. It then times out and clicks shut just in time for him to nut it again. We also have a cat too stupid to use it, but then again, she couldn't use a normal catflap either!

He needed to, we went away the next day for 2 weeks and left him with a cat-sitter!

Thought ours was bad enough doing the 'tap it with the paw incase of booby trap' routine each time he goes in or out!
I bought a Pet Porte but haven't fitted it yet.
We've got a sealed UPVC front door and I'm unsure about blasting a big hole in it to fit the (fairly flimsy) cat flap.
There's no seal between the flap and the housing so wind will surely come whistling in round the flap edges right?
We've given it a dry run by pushing puss thought the unfitted unit which went as well as could be expected - recognised chip straight away.
I decided on the Pet Porte because of the external overhanging sensor - makes sense that the sensor picks up the cat's chip in the neck that way.
My only worry is fitting into sealed units. Anyone done this?

Doesn't that make your hallway / house cold?We've had a much more marked drop in temp from removing some wall and putting patio doors in!
