Organise my surround sound....

I promise this will be my last AV question!!!!



The red dots are the speakers for the 5.1 system. The green blob is the sub.

Due to the layout of the rom the TV has to go in a corner - which i know isn't ideal.

This means the front and centre ones are more or less whwere they are and can't really go anywhere elese.

The rear right is about right too i think.

I'm concerned with the rear left.

Shoudl it stay where it is or shoudl it go in the top left corner, at the other end to where it is now?

Any advice?

Sorry yeah my drawing skills are pretty poor - the sette is actually at and angle, and isn't as big as it looks, i quite often sit on that sofa - the missus prefers the other one tho....

why can't the 2nd sofa go under the window, that would make life a lot easier?

If you can't move the TV to be against a wall (even if you have to hang it), this layout will never really work IMO...

As a minimum though, you need one sofa parallel to the TV. You would then put the 1st sofa next to it, and the coffee table in front. I would then get ceiling mounted speakers for the rear L, R and rear centre.

It mught be argued that since no seating position is exactly at the sweet spot, the precise positioning of the surrounds is not that relevant. BTW surrounds in a 5.1 system really shouldn't be behind you, more to either side.

Get your front left and front right further apart, you won't be making good use of the 'surround' sound effects etc with them that close together. I've got mine too close (no choice) and it really weakens the impact of the sound effects.

As long as those surrounds are firing at each other, rather than the the television and its all setup on the amp properly its about as good as you'll get with that layout.

Unfortunatly Finlandia - you've moved the second sofa to infront of the fireplace.

I forgot about that and missed it off the origional drawing.

I might just experienmtn with moving the left hand speaker along the wall its on and see where it sounds best from.

A. Don't use fireplace.
B. Move sofa from infront of fireplace to infront of window.

That looks alright to me, to be honest.

Re. the "move the fronts apart", I never reccomend the "ultra wide front 3" approach, as it makes the sound wrong - explosions on the left of the screen are still on the screen, not 5 foot over there <---. THX rules state no more than 2 feet from the screen (but admittably they presume you're running a projector, and have a pretty big screen, lol)
