Music required for golden wedding anniversary party

I've been lumbered with organizing the music for my parents golden wedding anniversary.

Ideally live music, ambient, background type stuff that's suitable for the majority of the guests who will be in their 70s.

Any suggestions?

Alternatively, do you have their take on the string quartet stuff? Or, if it's a big piss up affair, and you want "big" music rather than background, then a decent covers band that do older stuff might be the way forward?

nip out to hmv, buy a few compilations long the lines of best of doo wop / 50's rockabilly / 60's girl groups / swing jazz / big band.

right era, covers all bases, minimal effort.

Sounds like an ideal situation for a solo jazz pianist/vocalist to me. Either that, or a swing/jazz duo (Saxophone and Piano for example). Nice, chilled out background musak for everyone to ignore!

Visit and check the station their radio is tuned to.
Turn on radio and retune......comments may range from "oh, I like that" to "leave the xxxxxx radio alone"

Buddy Holly, Everly Brothers, Neil Sedaka would have been flavour of the day.
Cliff Richard may also appeal but could put inheritance at risk.

A decent DJ usually gets it right.
