GPS enabled mobilephones

Can (any) of the GPS phones on the market be used as a speedo, i.e. calculating your speed and distance by satellites?

The iPhone can do it with a app

But its bks as it clocked my landrover at over 80mph which just ain't possible

with software yes, mine can do it via tomtom - but there are no doubt mroe basic ones that just measure what you want 9i.e speed)

iPhone. There's several applications that for it that do that kind of thing, as well as G metres and so on

Plenty of software available for the Windows Mobile phones that will do it.

Depends on software, Nokia comes with "Navigation" & "Position" applications under Tools. There's one called MobiTrack as well, and all satnav programs will give you speed etc.

I was thinking of using it on my mountainbike, to keep track of my speed and distances and so on, preferably with some sort of accuracy.

Instead of going for the Forerunner series.

Nokia N95 does it although I've yet to try it out myself.

My N95 8Gb can and does it fine.

It does, however, eat battery like nobody's business when it's on.....

And here is a LINK to a commercial app called Run.GPS which is a bit more polished and is what I use when I'm on my bike or running.

ETA: there are plenty of others out there. And they do eat the battery. I get about an hour and half with the GPS on after a full charge. The cycle computer one can turn the GPS on and off at regular intervals to save the battery, but that's no good if you want on the fly speeds.

I was going to say, my Nokia N95 8GB does it fine.. And was pretty accurate.

Someone on the N95 forum took his apart and added a better GPS reciever which was quite cool

I keep trying to get a mount for my N95 to do this, no luck yet

I use Cameraware which is a speed camera database. It gives you speed, direction etc and also what cameras you are coming up to etc. It allows you to keep logs for Google Earth etc.

http://www.sportsdo.net - £25 for a licence but it looks quite good.

Have heard that GPS built in can nail the battery, so a separate bluetooth GPS unit can be better (or a spare battery!).

I use a i-blue GPS datalogger/bluetooth which can be a standalone logger, or connects to phone by bluetooth. Lots of free GPS software out there too - one of the bests lists http://www.maps-gps-info.com/fgpfw.html
