when we were getting a kitten we thought about that, after a phone call to a rude woman and 100+ questions we were told we had to have new upstairs windows with child locks on so the cat wouldnt fall out in the summer, a taller fence so it wouldnt jump and go into the road

blimy its a cat they go outside not live in a cotton wood box.

and these are cats needing a loving home

Some houses just aren't suitable for cat ownership.

When we bought this place, one of the things at the very top of our list of priorities was that it had to be a cat friendly area.

in what way, how would a taller fence stop a cat going into the road, and does every cat owner have child locks on there upstairs windows ?

Sounds like you had an unfortunate encounter with rescue. Not everyone is like that - try another one

Rescue is fine for an only pet, but to go with an existing pet it is unfair to both to get one with a past, the rescue cat went in for a reason and the home is unlikely to give you the full story

Utter, utter rubbish.

All animals have a past. Not all animals that end up in rescue have been abused or have behavioural problems, which I guess is what you are implying? A decent rescue will tell you all that it knows about the animal. No point in homing to somewhere unsuitable or not telling the truth as the animal will just bounce back. What's the point in that

We have 2 rescue cats.

First got twins from the centre, because their owners had split up and couldn't decide who was going to take the cats with them. Unfortunately one had a heart condition and died at 2 years old.

We then got another rescue cat which had had a really tough life. Only 6 months old, found abandoned and pregnant in a scummy council house. Can't think of any worse way for a kitten to learn about the world - she had been surviving on flies for weeks.

There were the usual scuffles when they first met, and they still view each other with suspicion (the shorthair appears to think the longhair is a freak and the other way around.....), but they happily settled into a life of tolerating each other.
