MIL asked how mine and the OH's work was going and I told her the doom and gloom of hardly any jobs coming in and that the OH's company is not doing well.

She is not to be outdone tho' and starts moaning that the most interest that she can get on her £500K sitting in the bank is 7%.

Please can you find out which bank is paying 7%? I'd like to put my £500K there.

I can't quite see how this would make sound financial sense though.

Just tell her that if her bank gets into trouble it will only guarantee £35,000 of it.

Obviously depends on who her bank is, but it will get her thinking and give you a little victory until she finds out.
