Any idea how they can afford to pay shelf stackers £9 an hour and store managers £40k after minimal training?

Something tells me there success wont last too long at those rates

The graduates get worked to the frikkin bone and then kept on working, and then revived with smelling salts and made to work a bit more, and that's all before breakfast.

Minimal racking is the stores for a start, it comes off the truck on a pallet - and goes on display on the pallet.

Not many shop floor staff or checkout bods compared to our other supermarkets.

+ the other thing that people forget, have you seen how many stores they have back in Germany?!!

I remember working as a shelf stacker when I was at school (not Aldi admittedly). I wouldn't have done my managers job for 42K. Anytime he wasn't sleeping he was working there. His life was the supermarket. fk that.

Who is more efficient, two or three lazy tts at Tesco or one ALDI/Lidl worker?

There are few less employees in Lidl & Aldi stores.

And the highest management level turnover in the industry.

Area Managers in Training spend a majority of their first year working in store - with the 12 hour days, working most weekends etc.

I've worked in retail management for nearly 15 years now and see lots of ex-Aldi managers applying for jobs after only a few months in the role.

Sure the money looks good but for the amount of hours they work you like a donkey, you may aswell get two jobs and be paid the same.

You really have to earn your 42k and Audi. You only get something like 1 Sunday off a month and are expected to work every single other day. The role, as I understand it, is a very much hands on one. They have you cleaning toilets, stacking shelves etc as well as managerial tasks so not a glamourous role in the slightest.
Their selection process is a rigerous one and they only take really very strong candidates ( a couple of friends who were at Cambridge that I know of got in).
Lidl run a similar scheme. Regarding the matter of whether they can afford to pay such relatively high salaeries could be expained by the fact that hard discounters are the fastest growing sector in retail.

If I remember correctly store staff are classed as self employed, so out of their hourly rate they have to pay their own tax and national insurance contributions. Not sure if that is still the case.
