DIY - External Door

Looking for some advice/pointers regarding my wooden external back door.

The locking mechanism is starting to play up and may need replacing.

The door was made by a local(unknown) company before I bought the house. The lock system, which runs the full height of the door, works as follows:

pull up the handle to engage the locking mechanism at three points - one rectangular "plate" (20mm tall 3mm thick) at handle plus 2 hooks (1 each at approx 90mm from top and bottom of door).

Previously when you pulled the handle up to engage the locking mechanism the handle would drop back to the horizontal. Now the handle stays in the up position and if you push it back to the horizontal the locking mechanism disengages.

I am probably going to need to replace the whole mechanism but am not sure where I would get a replacement. Have had a look at Google, for "door furniture", but get nothing but handles, hinges, etc.

Where are you located? I use a company in Luton called Window parts. As a locksmith I use them all the time and they haven't failed to supply replacements yet. If its still made they will have it if not they can sort a substitute. They do mail order and are very helpfull, give them a call 01582 486566

most locks are of a fairly standard/common design, so replacing the lock mech just by itself will be OK

It wouldn't do any harm to take the lock apart and have a look at it before you spend out on a replacement. You could well find that the mechanism is just getting a bit sticky and a drop of oil might solve the problem.

You might just get away with a squirt of WD40 or replacing the spring on the handle rather than the whole fitting

Not neccesarily so, I have hardwood french doors with that setup... I think the locking mechanism is manufactured by ERA

It's still not very common for timber doors because of the price - you lucky devil.

ha ha, believe it or not I bought and installed these, and they came from Wickes of all places... 6 foot hardwood french doors for about £600 IIRC... when I got some purpose made they quoted me £200 for the same locking setup...

Oooh. Good call. I need to replace the espagnollette locks on one of my UPVC windows and they are pretty local.
