Boiler troubles (oil fired)

Our Grant combi boiler is being a nuisance , its not working consistantly , sometimes it fires other times it wont , its not locking out and looking at the control panel everything seems normal

You can hear the motor running all the time so i suspect its something like the photocell not working properly or the sight glass sooty but thats where my knowledge stops

Before i take the covers off and check it out anything else to look at while i'm there??

We had a problem where the pump motor would stop in a certain place and would bind up. A bit of percussive maintenance worked for a while, but it did lock-out from that. We also had a photo-cell problem last summer, but that was a fault in the control unit not seeing the sensor, again it locked-out from that. So I'm not a lot of help really!

The pump on our boiler failed at Christmas (great Timing) and although only a couple of years old the repair guy said that he had noticed an increase in pump / motor failures over the year. He said that, in his opinion, it was down to large variances in fuel Viscosity. Obviously heavier oil made all components in the boiler work harder although he also stated though that the fuel suppliers would not comment on this.

Well cleaned the sensor and its still not firing , its not locking oiut and you can hear a fan or motor running but its not lighting

It sounds like the control box.
If it was pretty much anything else it would lockout.

Is that the control box in the boiler or the control unit which tells the boiler when to work???

The one on the boiler with the lockout button on it.

It was the photo cell , guy replaced it and it works fine
