Getting my new born baptised in May.

My OH tells me that at least one of the Godparents needs to be Catholic, is this the case?

Wouldn't it be a bit rediculous having a GOD parent who was a different religion to the child? They are supposed to guide the child through religious eductation umongst other things, so I expect there are rules about being Catholic as well rolleyes

So what religion is the other one - Muslim? Can't see the Catholics allowing that somehow

Our baby girl will be baptised in a couple of weeks and we have been told by the new local priest that all/any godparents must be catholic.

The previous priest was a bit "cooler" when it came to baptising our (then) baby boy. He allowed us one out the pair of godparents to be non-catholic.

I think the new priest is probably technically correct however I'm not sure what it means to be a godparent. As I'm not religious in the slightest I have elected people who will be there for our children in the event that we "go down in flames" and my (next in line for my kids) parents are unable to step-in. My wife agrees. She wishes to first to "do right by our children" and secondly by the church so in two weeks time we will have two catholic friends at the cermemony and a third (the husband of one of the catholic friends) sharing the honours at the party afterwards.

Q. 2. To be a sponsor, must the person be Catholic?

A. According to Canon Law # 874 §2, "a baptised person who belongs to a non-catholic ecclesial community may be admitted only in company with a Catholic sponsor, and then simply as a witness to the baptism."

Being "catholic" and being "Catholic" are VERY, VERY different things. The Church of England claims it is catholic, but it definitely ISN'T Catholic.

I've had all 3 of my children baptised Catholic and each time at least one of the god parents was not a Catholic (C of E). The priest had no problem with any of them.
He did say at least 1 had to be a Catholic.
The non Catholics can still give spiritual guidance and advice.

that would apply to me then - my Goddaughter is Catholic, my Godson is as well... Mrs XXVIII is Catholic, I'm not ...

edited to add, should it make the least difference, she's the child's Godmother in both cases as well...

edited again to say - the priest in one instance was a firebrand, hardline Catholic and in the other a self-proclaimed more modernist kind of chap... neither said I had to be Catholic... perhaps they'll be damned to a sooty damnation for under enforcement, perhaps...

Things you don't expect to see in PH posts #583... Canon Law quoted and discussed.

They all SHOULD be Catholic, but 9 times out of 10 most Priests will go for 1 out the group.
