Following on from the Literacy on Forums thread. A simple poll. Do you tend to view a post as being less relevant if the grammar or spelling is poor. If a poster has consistently poor spelling and grammar do you tend to view their posts equally with others or with less regard. If a poster uses "Ur" instead of "your" or other TXT SPK phrases do you stop reading or go on regardless.

Yes, I start to not bother reading them. It's too much like hard work trying to actually decipher what has been written, translating it into English then trying to think up a reply.
I am talking about the terrible ones though, not those which just have your and you're mixed up. Or were and where... I think a fair few spelling errors come from the reliance of MS Word Spellchecker as I see more American spellings these days (and I know I am guilty of that too!).

Likewise, but it does not take long to realize that the value of the content is often linked to the care taken over the spelling and grammar within. I'm no lexicographical fascist but sloppy wording usually equals sloppy thought-train.As long as it doesn't tie your brain in knots when you try to read it, I don't really mind.
Even if all the native English speakers on here should be able to write perfectly (and I know I can't), there are enough foreigners who you can't realistically expect to have a perfect grasp of the language... I'd rather they were speaking slightly broken English than some foreign mumbo jumbo.

To be fair, I think its two differnet issues. Poor Spelling and Grammer are often a sign of angry, irate, upset or other emotional posts. These replies often come 'from the heart' rather than the head. Obviously some are down to lazyness or perhaps lack of pride in ones online persona or even just plain lack of education. All forgivable.

It's a difficult one, not everyone has English as their first language plus I'm a terrible typist especially when I'm in a hurry or using a phone for internet access, my fingers just get all jumbled it's horrendous and yet my written work never suffers the same errors.

If a post is badly written, structured or just full of spelling mistakes, I will generally still read to get the gist of what the person is trying to say.
What is REALLY frustrating though, is a war & peace type post contained within a single paragraph - infuriating! Although, txt speak tends to get zero response from me, unless I feel extraordinarily compelled to respond to the post (not the issue of txt speak itself)
Some people are not particularly brilliant with the written form and it's subtleties, but do try to improve. I remember a certain PH'er admitting that before he came to PH, his writing & debating ability wasn't up to much at all, but by continuous posting and contributing, he did improve - rather well, as it happens.
What is REALLY frustrating though, is a war & peace type post contained within a single paragraph - infuriating! Although, txt speak tends to get zero response from me, unless I feel extraordinarily compelled to respond to the post (not the issue of txt speak itself)

Anyone can make a typo or a quick spelling mistake.
If the post is a 300 word paragraph with no punctuation, I don't bother reading it. Equally, if it's written in the style of a retard I might pay less attention than I should to it's point.
There has to be room for errors, but that doesn't excuse people from trying to make their writing legible and coherent.

We can all misspell words and mess our grammar up when quickly posting (eg from work), but txt speak is not acceptable when you have a keyboard in front of you.

Granted, complete illiteracy or only being able to communicate in TXT SPK is a different matter, but I really don’t understand people going ape about the odd typo. It seems like a particularly insecure form of intellectual snobbery.
Even the most respected writers in the business occasionally hit the wrong key stroke if they’re sending an email or something. Why? Because they have better things to do with their time than proof read a casual note. I’d say the same very much applies to a forum – it’s not prose, it’s chatting about cars while you should be doing work!
