cheap new york accomodation
Discussion
I took my family of five for a week a few years ago. We stayed near Empire State Building off 5th Avenue.
I did loads of research on hotels using the travel and hotel websites. When I homed in on my choice, out of curiosity, I phoned the hotel direct and got a much better deal than the so called "best price" sites. What's more I did not have to pay in advance.
Don' be put off room only rates either. Breakfast in cafe's is a good deal. Our hotel served free coffee and muffins for residents as well

Its pleasure never been the the states so just thought NY would be a good starting point.
Not really in my view. Much better to do a fly drive and travel to see the real States. We did Florida for 2 weeks without going to a single Disneyesk place and it was great intro. New York is just a big city. Nice enough but I only like it when the company pays. These days New York doesn't do cheap.
It's worth checking out some of the apartment places as they can be very reasonable for a week or more. Certainly cheaper than a hotel, you get your own place, with kitchen facilities.
We used this website last year: http://www.metrodwellings.com/default.htm
and had a lovely apartment on W 71st about 1/2 block from Central Park. We were there for Thanksgiving and wanted to be close to the parade route.

If you want real basic but decent accomodation that is in a great location, I recommend this place:

I have stayed there a few times when passing through NY and have recommended it to friends to have also used it.
It's not got a lift so you have to carry your cases up the stairs and the rooms are functional but comfortable with aircon, cable TV. No room service of other frills, but if you just want a place to crash you can't fault it

I stayed at the Penn a few times last year. Cheap compared to others and cheerful enough..

Location is fantastic right in the centre of Manhatten at 32nd and 7th. You'll never forget the phone number either Pennsylvania 65000. It was undergoing a repaint when I was there.
You should go for breakfast here...

...if you get the chance, it's really rather good.

There's a floating barge accomidation in the style of a plane which is currently empty, scrub the skid marks off the seats and Bobs your uncle.
Have a couple of these
