Reactions to Good GCSE results.
Discussion
My 15 year old son, passed GCSE english with a grade B yesterday. His reaction was relief and pride in himself. The HARD work paid off.
Some of his class mates reacted in a way he thought a bit stupid.
1) a girl who ONLY got a B, cried as she wanted an A.
2) a girl who got an A said she'd have to take it again to try and get an A*.
Someone needs to slap them or thier parents.

Just remind them the tests are getting easier so more of them get good graded for the statistics, usually cheers them up
I know that's a joke.
I'm not convinced by the old 'GCSEs are a piece of piss' belief. He's done more work and in more detail than I did for my O levels. In fact his project for food tech (to design a ready meal for one) puts my A level Design project (I designed and built a one wheel trailer for a motorbike) to shame.
I cried when I got my B grade Maths A-Level. Even though my other grades were crap it was Maths that I really worked hard for and convinced myself, by talking to friends after the exam about answers they got, that I'd got an A. I was so disappointed and all set to get it re-marked. My tutor told me not to as it probably wouldn't make any difference.

The two girls are being stupid. No-one will care about their GCSEs in a couple of years. Well done to your lad, he's done very well for himself, esecially as we had him tested for Dyslexia at aged 10 because his progress in English was so bad.
EFA. He's not dyslexic. It turns out the teachers were s
t in primary. Aye, well done to the lad.
I buggered up my exam results (long story,) back in '99.
Luckily however, I realised they didn't mean much as the majority of 'potential' employers merely cared whether I had PASSED or FAILED.
As such, I simply put the lessons I passed; completely avoiding the grade(s) I received.
I'm currently trying to explain this to my 14yr old cousin, who is quite worried about the exams.
How do you say "it doesn't really matter," without pissing her father off?

Doing more work doesn't make you cleverer. The fact that there is an A* grade, which didn't exist before, implies that an A-grade in past examinations is worth more than a new one. Objectively, if you were an employer and wanted to select between candidates based on what grades they had achieved, you would effectively treat an A* as the new 'A' grade. Back to topic, when i took my GCSEs i was absolutely gutted when i got a B - IMO striving to do better should be commended, not slapped down.Edited by fido on Friday 16th January 13:49

Sorry Mr P, not having a dig but am I missing something? Why should they get a slap? Perhaps they had worked hard, put in lots of effort and were disappointed with their results?2) a girl who got an A said she'd have to take it again to try and get an A*.

From memory I got 2 As 5 Bs a C and a D. I wasn't disappointed by the D in Design Technology because the CD rack I made as my coursework was the biggest pile of sh*t I've ever seen.
I think I have just found my evil twin, I got exactly the same marks and built a CD rack in DT Yes mine was s
t as well

Anyone that thinks spending time trying to get an A moved to an A* when they have 9 other GCSE's to study for, clearly has their priorities VERY wrong.

Have a look at the other side of all this.
When I was 14 I got an A in my English O-Level (yes long time ago). Couldn't wait to tell my dad as he was someone very hard to impress.
When I told him he said "thats why I pay for you to go to such a good school.". I was gutted
