'Double your money' error

Forgive me for being thick here, but how can they prove you received 'double your money' from the machine? Obviously those that withdrew £300 from 5 different accounts are easy to spot. But what about those that withdrew £10, £20 or £50 out and received double, not so easy to spot surely?
Also, when the banks incorrectly make charges on youru account, they aren't so quick to refund you are they? One rule for one...
