Drinking from a bottle - how big is rude?

Obviously the little 250ml, 330ml, 500ml bottles are pretty much designed for this.
But where do you draw the line?

I consider drinking straight from a 2ltr bottle to be in bad taste (say of Pepsi), but what about the 1.25ltr bottle?

You can drink from a 2ltr bottle if your in your own house and all you need is a swig, but not in public oir the office.
