How to set up my LCD TV?

Hi all,
We recently purchased an LCD TV. It's a Samsung .It gives a good picture most of the time except when there's a white background (ie ski or sky shot with white clouds) which makes all detail disapear. The screen then becomes like a white canvas.
I've tried playing with brightness and other menus but I can't get to something decent and I screw up the rest of the colours which were fine.
I seem to remember quite a while ago someone posting a link toward a website giving you all the best setup for all brands of TV, I did a search but no luck.
