Your High Street this weekend.

So all through the end of last year and the beginning of this my visits to the town centre have always prompted me to think "Credit crunch? What credit crunch?"

But this weekend it was a different story....



And pacing the empty streets we passed the sorry looking ranks of The Pier, USC, Officers Club, Jigsaw, Uniglo (or whatever) and others as well as a number of smaller independent retailers.

It's murder on the shop floor.

Last week a certain concession I know of in Selfridges, Trafford Centre was down (about) 10k on same week last year.

Some areas are doing well though.

But then this time of year is always a quiet time for most retail businesses

Uniqlo has been kicked out by the landlord to let Barclays move in.

But you are right - managed to get in and park in the Oracle a bit too easily.

I was in PC World, Enfield, yesterday.

It was so busy that if you wanted help in buying anything you had to give your name to a clipboard wielding manager who in turn directed the harassed salesman to the next in line.

Fortunately, I didn't need help. Nontheless,I queued for 15 minutes to pay for my wireless router.

I happened to be there this afternoon too. Although not as manic as Saturday, it was still very busy.

Bit hard to avoid the bloody supermarkets however

I wouldn't know. The high street is not a place to shop - I have the internet for that.

The high street is a place to stumble through at 0200 in the morning on the look-out for a kebab shop.

I know this may seem a bit insensitive, but the Officers Club had a notice in its window saying the administrators had been called in etc, and all I could think of was when are they going to open the doors and give all their stock away for buttons

But when I went back all the stock was gone

I think you phrased that wrong. If you needed help, you would of asked someone who knew. Not a member of PC world staff.

It seems to be a bit busier on the streets in York, however I know those in retail say they aren't selling the more expensive items.

Tbh, I was surprised at how many staff there appeared to be. Purple shirts everywhere!

No. But they may well do pretty soon. A large number of the bosses have just been given the boot, and internal guesstimates suggest that 3,000 staff could be laid off from PC World, Currys and Currys.Digital stores in the next two months.
