Domestic Burglar Alarm suitable for Home with Dogs
Discussion
Following on from my experience last week of one the local scroats breaking into my car whilst parked on the drive. We are thinking about having an alarm for the house.
We have lived in Wiltshire for 15 years and have never had any problems, but I think now is the time to have a think about improving security.
We looked at alarms a few years ago and looked at a very reputable local firm, but the problem was that as we had dogs PIR's were not really possible (even the so called pet friendly ones).
So my question to those on PH with hounds and alarms, how have you got around this.
I should also add that the dogs do have free rain of the house and this has to continue.

If you have UPVC double glazed units, I believe they are rarely broken for access, due to the noise. If so, glass break sensors are not necessary.
Pressure pads and movement sensors are out if the dogs are roaming.
That only leaves door contacts that trigger when the door opens. Can you confine the dogs to one room and fit those...?

in my last house we fitted an alarm with the pet friendly pir's and they seemed to work well. i cant remember what the weight was for them to detect (how big is your dogs?)
in the house we live in now we have door breaks on all external doors and a pir in the lounge, the cat is not aloud in the lounge when we are out and thats is where the expensive stuff is! well the 14" portable.

Pet PIR's are generally up to 100lbs animals. Cats are mostly a pain in the arse, but yet to have a problem with dogs that couldn't be compensated for on the setting up of the PIR.
Depending on the detector they can work really well for dogs. You can also get more stable ones as well ( Pet immune Dual Techs ) if required.
Have found that pet immumes may require a little setting up on the odd occasion, but your alarm company will be able to advise you on what detectors are required.
One of the problems with pet detectors is the slower 'catch rate' but it's better than having no alarm at all, as both my unfortunate neighbours found to their cost a few days ago.
