Recommend me some (fiction) books...

I'm getting fed up with all of the crap on TV and have started doing a lot more reading again and was wondering if anyone can recommend me a few good fiction books. I've always read non-fiction but after reading 1984 I'm thinking there may be something in this non-factual stuff.... Anything along the lines of crime/thriller/spy/government conspiracy type stuff (these are the type of films I usually go for!) or something that has just been a great read!!

check out some decent sci fi by Alastair Reynolds, start with "Chasm City" perhaps.

Also reccomend "The amazing adventures of Kavalier and Clay" by Michael Chabon - its good. He has a crime one out too called "The yiddish policeman's union" I think, I haven't read it though. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Amazing-Adventures-Kavalie...

I also enjoy Iain M. Banks Sci fi books but Reynolds is probably a bit more readable.

I'm reading The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet and REALLY enjoying it!

Based around the building of a Monastary in the 1100's, loads of consipracy, hidden agendas and some rude bits!

First off - anything by Alexei Sayle... he's a bit of a pistonhead and an excellent (slightly dark) fiction writer.

Fantastic read

& he co-wrote and co-produced the first six series of the BBC science fiction comedy Red Dwarf if you liked that.
