Both places are similar in lattitude - I wonder if someone is taking pot-shots at us and it depends which part of the earth is facing the culprit!

Many more would potentially if the atmosphere wasn't in the way, more a case of how often do ones come along that are large enough not to be burnt up way in the upper atmosphere.

Thousands occur annually, most are never seen. There are quite a few annual trips to remote deserts to find the remnants of these. They are easier to find in open desert terrain apparently.
