One night in NY

Going to by flying into JFK at the start of April, will get there just before 11pm on a monday night and fly out at 8am the next morning.

I've never been to NY before so seems like a good idea to jump in a taxi and see what me and the gf can get up to for a few hrs rather that sitting about in an airport!

Any suggestions for where to go, do, etc??

It will take 90 minutes to clear immigration and arrive in Manhattan. You'll have to check in at 6am for an 8am flight. So you're going to be in New York for five hours between midnight and 5am.

if you do get out of the airport, top of the Rockefeller center great views late at night.

On Saturday morning, around midday, it took us less than 90 minutes to get from walking off the plane to walking through the front doors of the Waldorf Astoria. I guess there's busy times and less than busy times

with no luggage take the subway to/from JFK - $7 each way (takes about an hour) or if you're feeling swish the LIRR is about $12 and takes 35 min - as fast as any taxi pretty much.

Oh, and at that time of night - it may be the city that never sleeps, but its the nightcrawlers at that time (I know having spent many nightshifts roaming the streets of downtown) - I wouldn't bother, come back another time when things are open and you're not knackered.....get a room in an airport hotel, you'll appreciate it more...

Ultimately you will be spending about 13 or 14 hours travelling for what will equate to under 5 hours at your destination... most of which probably taken up by airport transfers etc...

The last time we were in NY we gave a taxi driver $50 and said take us round all the places you can till the money runs out then bring us back to the hotel. He took us round for the best part of an hour and we got to see loads of stuff... plenty of non tourist spots too and the taxi driver was full of knowledge and stories....

You aren't going there and back just for a few hours, shirley? Waste of time and money in my opinion.

I'd guess you are transiting somewhere. There is no 'transit' any more in the USA, so either way, you'll have to go through the same immigration fiasco, which can be quick sometimes, agonizingly slow and frustrating other times, with huge queues.

Yes going to be in transit, heading on to the Virgin Islands. Went through USA immigration last year on a similar trip and it wasn't too bad.
I can spend a night in bed sleeping anytime so if I’m in NY even if it is a flying visit would seem like a waste not to do something!

The Rock closes at 2am. But the views are fantastic. Also try the Empire State, its another 30 stories. But I dont know if its open that late.
