Well I'm of to France in a couple of months and obviousley It's a big move to up sticks and leave.The more I think about the way this country is being led into a financial black hole,the more I'm convinced we've made the right decision.Gordon and his chums dont know what to do other than keep spending.I fear for the next generation and the amount of debt they will be burdened with.France won't be a bed of roses but it can't be any worse than what's on offer

I don't know about France, but we moved out to Italy over a year ago, but due to the direct tax burden being almost three times as high as the UK, I have decided to work from the UK for 6 months and pay UK taxes into my UK Ltd company account - in Italy you really are working for the state, and not yourself.

Yeah, France doesn't have any social or financial problems at all.

I think Italy is a bigger financial disaster than Britain if such a thing is possible. It has lived off diddling its neighbours for years. Gordie's next great ruse will be to push UK taxes up.

Will you be employed, or freelance? (I am the latter) Apparently, if an employer gives an emplyee 1000 Euro per month net, the employer then has to pay the tax offices the same again for their employees taxes and NI! And they wonder why tax evasion is so rife!

And they have a national pride that seems to have gone missing here. But their problems dwarf ours' IMHO. This is from October 2006

Having just spent 3 years in Paris.... I can tell you that it is just as bad there! Nightly riots, burning cars are frequent. The rich poor divide and racism is staggering.

90% of the people I work with are French nationals and most of them are glad to be over here.

The grass is most definitely greener.

Chris which part of Italy do you live in?!!!

Tax starts at 18% and has 5 bands up to 45% maximum. National insurance and pension is 11% so a higher rate tax payer sees 50% overall deductions compared to 40% overall (tax + NA) in the UK.

Oh and I live and am taxed in Italy and negotiated my package to offset the extra 10% overall deductions
