I have to go to London on a Friday, stop overnight for an early morning Saturday thing and then come back Saturday evening. National Express East Coast kindly offer to sell me a first class return ticket for some astronomical sum (about £205), with no reduction for the fact that the 100 minute journey will take twice as long due to engineering works.

Due to the works the return jouney will involve 2 changes and part of the journey on a coach from Hatfield to Huntingdon so my lovely first class ticket will count for nothing for most of the trip.

And they wonder why I prefer to drive and clog up the city.

I calculated that cheaper to leave my V8 idling outside their train station, rent ANOTHER car, drive that to where I need to go and back, come back, drop off the rental, catch a cab back to my still idling car, fill up the tank and drive home than it costs to pay those nests of vipers that run the 'rail' system.
