Thinking of writing a book/short stories

Hello all.
Been thinking about this idea for a while now and have decided to take the plunge and begin writing stories. I have loads of ideas but have never written anything bigger than my degree dissertation (which was actually about 20,000 words, but that was different).
Has anybody else on here written a book, short stories or articles, and had them published? My chosen genres wil be sci fi/fantasy/adventure and will obviously be fiction. I am interested in hearing from writers of all genres though, and writers of non fition too.
Thought i'd post this as I haven't seen a similar thread before.
Any bestselling authors hidden on here?
