I've got to go back to getting some ad pages sold in the Wales and Scotland 6 nations programmes, i hated doing this with the football progs, as i hate cold calling people.

when i had my own business it pissed me right off so i know first hand what its like, is there somewhere i can find marketing managers details, or email address's.

My thinking is if i email then they have the choice to read the offer or discard it and therefore be less annoying?

Any idea's? the less annoying the better really.

It's quite a while since I've done advertising sales, but in my experience there's simply no substitute for picking up the phone and calling people.

A first step though should be making the most of existing and past advertisers. Get back in contact with them. See if they will take more space or more prominent ads, and see if they know anyone else who might benefit from an ad in there. A lot of good sales can come this way, and a lead in like "your friend/client/colleague X said I should get in touch with you about this..." is so much better than a cold call.

I've done alot of that, i still have quite a few contacts from when i was doing the football ad's stuff, so that was the first thing i did.

Sadly as its football and not Rugby there's not much crossover but i've sorted some out that way, also put out emails to all the media companies i used to deal with so im hoping they will come back with something.

Guess i'll have to swallow my pride on this one and start annoying the country...

Unless the offer is exceptional then your response rate through cold emails will be well below 0.5%.

Telesales is the proven way here. Perhaps call around a few telesales companies and see if any are open to working on a commission only basis?

If you need data then the company I always recommend to clients is Corpdata.

You could buy a list of marketing managers and their email addresses but it would cost a minimum of a couple of hundred quid to buy the list. Emails aren't a very effective way of getting hold of people though, most marketing emails end up in peoples spam folders or ignored. From what I remember getting a read rate of 5% for an email campaign is considered pretty good.
