How councils waste money.

Cumbria council has a policy of making sure road bridges can take the weight of 44 tonnes. All good, and keeps the road network in order.
Just down the road from me is the village of Braystones, and they have had their bridge upgraded - a bargain at £650k. Problem is, there is no way to get a 44 ton load anywhere near it, the roads are just too narrow and have too many 90 degree bends. A challenge for a caravan, let alone at truck.
A few miles down the road, when they resurface the A595, it is a 90 mile detour as they haven't got a couple of grand to surface a farm track!

That would get up to (and over) it's weight limit. Admittedly an unlikely scenario. 
The worst one I heard recently was a guy who drove a digger for the council.
Someone asked if they could borrow his grease gun but he said he didn't know if he had one with him. When they asked when he last used it his reply was,
"I've never used it. I'll get a new one faster this way."
Thats a £50k peice of equipment!

Is the road in question an A road? They may have had to upgrade the bridge in order for the road to retain it's designation. Just down the road from me is the village of Braystones, and they have had their bridge upgraded - a bargain at £650k. Does it go over a railway?
I'm sure I've heard something along these lines somewhere - can't remember where.
