Tempered Glass Strength

Is there a formula for working out the strength (well the weight that can be placed on top of it) for tempered glass.
I have a piece about 500mm x 400mm x 5mm thick and would like to know what it can support before trying it.
Is it that straight forward or are not all glasses made the same

P: safe load [lbs/sq.in] supported on all edges.
t = thickness [in.]
A = area [sq.in]
F = safety factor
sorry, don't have it in metric. this is for glass supported on the edges only, so if its supported on one face it'll be way more than this.
tbh, its only a few quid lost if you break it.

Structural strength is across the pain, not on the edges - so as long as you don't knock the sides you are fine! Seen many a demonstration of plate vs tempered and its quite amazing how much tempered can hold. Even then, when it does go, its not a catastrophic failure of the structure, its a little more 'composed' than that.

For some reason the glass coffee table next to it I don't think twice about sitting on 15ish Stone But it is a bit thicker, but a lot bigger span. 
If you apply the formula above (and some common sense - sorry 
), you'll realise that a smaller span will support a greater weight for a given thickness.raceboy said:

30Kg in the centre of the glass, and it's supported on 4 pillar.It's basically the top shelf of something quite simillar to this....

The top shelf is 580mm x 480mm x 5mm
- Unscrew the top section (take the cap off then unscrew the first tier).
- Remove 'spare' glass
- Refit spare glass onto another shelf as the joining threads are really long.
- Put the plastic cover back on again and your done.
Simple
