Is there a formula for working out the strength (well the weight that can be placed on top of it) for tempered glass.
I have a piece about 500mm x 400mm x 5mm thick and would like to know what it can support before trying it. wink
Is it that straight forward or are not all glasses made the same scratchchin

P = 84000t^2/AF

P: safe load [lbs/sq.in] supported on all edges.
t = thickness [in.]
A = area [sq.in]
F = safety factor

sorry, don't have it in metric. this is for glass supported on the edges only, so if its supported on one face it'll be way more than this.

tbh, its only a few quid lost if you break it.

what do i win?

What weight will you be putting on it, and how (and how much of) is the glass supported?

30Kg in the centre of the glass, and it's supported on 4 pillar.

It's basically the top shelf of something quite simillar to this....


The top shelf is 580mm x 480mm x 5mm

Structural strength is across the pain, not on the edges - so as long as you don't knock the sides you are fine! Seen many a demonstration of plate vs tempered and its quite amazing how much tempered can hold. Even then, when it does go, its not a catastrophic failure of the structure, its a little more 'composed' than that.

Fascinating stuff...

We had a table just like what you are talking about, Rude boy.

No idea of the tolerances of it but it was damned strong, I'll tell you - it even saw one of my mates drunkenly dancing on top of it!

it'll handle 30kg piece of piss. my dad's has a glass company and it amazes me how much it'll take on the pane

Think you will find it is MX5 X MR2 X 2 Sq x(-2x + d+7-g)+ CLS320

Ditto - coffee table of tempered glass that I (17 stone) fell on. Survived fine.

(the table that is, not me biggrin)

For some reason the glass coffee table next to it I don't think twice about sitting on 15ish Stone But it is a bit thicker, but a lot bigger span. paperbag

If you apply the formula above (and some common sense - sorry biggrin), you'll realise that a smaller span will support a greater weight for a given thickness.

I had two of those but wanted to put my Yamaha DSP-AX1 on it, but thought it would go straight through it (I don't know what it weighs, but its heavier than any of my professional Crown PA amps). Because the stand was too high, (only wanted 3 shelves) and I had two of them, this is what I did:

  • Unscrew the top section (take the cap off then unscrew the first tier).
  • Remove 'spare' glass
  • Refit spare glass onto another shelf as the joining threads are really long.
  • Put the plastic cover back on again and your done.
Of course if you want to keep it that height, just take one shelf down to your local glazier and ask them to make you another or a thicker one.

Mines only 'similar' to the pic but I had a look last night and I could 'double-up' the top shelf in the same style suggested. wink
Will probably go for that as I only need 2 shelves below it and it's only for a short period anyway.
