without being sarcastic, how about £x of shares in a bank of your choice. worth sod all now, but in 10-20yrs that will be different.
I would go with that. £500 will buy you around 1000 Lloyds TSB shares today. They were up near the £3 mark before Peston & Broon knackered the economy - so let's assume they get back up to £2 in 5 years or so - that's £2,000. shirt said:

Isn't that a bit risky with the current state of that industry? If I buy £100 of RBS for example whos to say they will even exist in 10 years time?I was given some good tips on this thread, and you would be able to share the benefit!

You have to be joking, right? Regulated by the government, can't get at the money until the child is 18, no say in how it is invested... better off sticking it in a big pile under the mattress. miniman said:

Good idea - there must be some form of ETF (Exchange Traded Fund) which just covers banks, so you get some spread of risk across them all...BoRED S2upid - Yes, buy some bank shares and tuck it away. They are but penny shares today. Lloyds best bet amongst a bad lot I suppose.
The little one is not going to know sod all about anything til 3-4 years anyway or until you tell him. Keep a record of your investment and gains. I hardly think you can go wrong at these levels.
Good luck and wish I had an uncle that was as thoughtful as you
