Hoover, or his replacement (I forget) also ploughed a huge pile of public money into public sector work with very little return. The only thing that really pulled the US out of the depression was WW2.

Obama is already starting to do this. Whether his public works are about keeping his promises, borrowing from the past, or, even fundable, are all questions to ask though....

Mr Blair tried "New Deal" here. I was unemployed at the time, and the best they could offer me was Forklift truck driver training or basic IT skills. For a laugh I asked to go to see the IT skills people for a suitability interview. You guessed it, I was better qualified than they were. I tried to get them to pay my benefit for 4 weeks while I went on a Microsoft Cert course, so I could afford to eat. No way. Not possible. After several months trying to get appropriate training, and refusing to go on utterly useless courses, I ended up on a course of antidepressants. Which was nice of them.
