Aren't the Scott's scrapping the barrel if they need to celebrate a poet of all things. Things must be bad if they need to celebrate a bloke who makes up rhymes LOL.

An old friend of ours died on Burns day (today) in 2000. We always raise a dram to him, or, as he used to say, on his first beer of the day,

"First of the day, anywhere".

+1. Surely the recession would be slightly improved by using the total output of the Daily Mail, it's staff and buildings as fuel for an experimental manure-fired power station. If not, I still think it would be agood idea. When I am king, they'll be the first against the wall.

BTW when you celebrate the New Year with "Auld Lang Syne", I bet you enjoy it, that one of Burn's, but I wont mention all the inventions which the Scots gave to the world, not enough space here...

That sounds fairly simple, just reversing the process of a fire powered manure station.

The media are intent on whipping up Anglo-Scots name calling anyway. Watched that on the BBC this morning, that nauseating, considered voice "but some say the Burn's night celebrations are giving rise to Scottish nationalism."

So why pick on Burns then to have a celebration night?

Maybe the English should have a Pam Ayres night, eat Cod and Chips and drink Ale to balance it out a bit and get all Nationalist for a day.

So why a Rhyme writer.....the mind boggles.

We hold a Burn's Night every year at our Golf Club - As an Englishman, I feel they get a bit samey year after year.. I missed the first one for many years last night. (I know it was on the wrong day)

I was Club Captain last year, so had to organise the evening - The reason we hold one every year is to satisfy the Scots amongst us - (Down south)

What I found difficult was to convince the Scots attending to help with the speeches, prose and toasts.. When there are a limited few, they have done all the official duties many, many times in the past, so the speeches get diluted year on year.

I tried to book a piper for the evening - Almost £200 he wanted just for piping the guests in, and the haggis, the he was off to another..! F%*&$king Liberty.
We downloaded some pipe tunes and played on a Bose system.

My question is - I know that it is a traditional evening... Been going for many years... Is something for the Scottish amongst us to celebrate etc etc..

But, does it make you feel proud to be Scottish..? Is today just another excuse for a piss-up..? Is the media hyping it up too much..? Much like valentines etc.. Do the younger generation celebrate it..? Watching the TV yesterday and this morning - Its more about Haggis Neaps and Tatties - Scots Vs English. Surely the Celebration of 250 years of Rabbies birth should be the focus.
