Toughened glass; can it be cut?

As the title says, really.

My wife bought a toughened glass splash-back for the kitchen ages ago. Got it out, and it is way too big.

Does anyone know if this stuff can be cut? I wouldn't attempt it myself; I'd measure up and find a 'specialist'. But before I play with yell.com etc, advice and guidance welcome.

Go to a local glass suppliers with the measurements and they will make you up a new piece.

Edit - typed to slow! I've never seen anyone cut a piece before. How did you manage that??

Right what sort of toughened glass are talking about? (thickness, lamination type, wire reinforcement (i doubt its got wires if its a splash back!)) Its only tempered using heating/cooling techniques. Diamond blade and high RPM and you can cut up to 6mm thickness (i did using a dremmel type tool, air line powered...). As i said it takes time....

You cannot cut toughened glass - It has to be cut and finished before it gets toughened

Very true sir, having done 10 years as a class cutter i have yet to meet anyone who can cut toughend glass
Now if it's laminated glass (6.4) then it can be cut, but its still difficult to take off 7mm as u end up nibbling it off and boy does it make a mess, looks like a dogs chewed it

So it seems like the general consensus of opinion is that my wife has wasted £100...... I guess I might be able to get a refund on it, but it was about a year ago...

Depending on the thickness they make excellent chopping boards for meat and veg and for pastry rolling.

From my limited knowledge toughened glass is permanently stressed, hence any crack or breakage means the whole thing shatters into small pieces and is nothing like as dangerous as normal glass. Laminated glass has plastic in the middle, cracks easily but the glass stays stuck to the plastic and isn't dangerous.

In a car related theme, the US has required laminated windscreens since at least the early sixties, the UK didn't switch until the mid seventies and until then most cars had toughened screens.

evidently i have not cut toughened glass.(just spent twenty mins googeling the subject!) I am going to go home now and make enquires as to what the feck i actually cut...... I'm not happy gents NOT HAPPY I TELL YOU! (mopes off)

My Landrover (from 84) had a toughened screen, It now has a laminated screen as your not allowed to replace with toughened now, It stayed in place when it went though, which was a surprise.

It's a CDA item and we got it from Bunny Appliances. I think they were in Nottingham.
