It's upgrade time again and I'm struggling to find a phone I really want, although the Nokia E71 looks like it ticks all the boxes. It's just that I've not used a Nokia in years now and have been very happy with Sony phones.
Does anybody have the E71 or any experience of it? Or is there anything else they could suggest? I'm not bothered about the camera, music player and don't like touch screens. I tend to use the phone for calls, texting, emails and basic web browsing.

I do hate slow phones. I also hate it when it's upgrade time and there is nothing out there that takes my fancy...I recently went from an N95 to an E71. I'm on 3 and therefore have limited choice of handsets - 3 is the only network that works in my house.
Overall I'm really happy with it. Keys are small, but you get used to them. Screen size doesn't really bother me, I have a computer for 'proper' web use, and the E71 is fine for the occasional browsing I do on it.
Depends what you want out of it, I only got it because it was the best of a bad bunch, and it was free!

Got an E71 and its great.
Slow? Rubbish. Its quick, fast to respond and has been utterly reliable for me. I am running the latest release of the firmware and I haven't had to restart it yet. It gets used for a mixture of things and has coped with it all - and a decent battery life too!
Good bits:
1) Its fast - fast to boot, fast to load applications, fast to do stuff!
2) Its full featured - Exchange email support and GPS
3) Lots of applications and tools - amazing what is out there but Google maps and Opera Mini are fantastic
4) Battery life - three days without a charge, just don't leave it on constant data
Bad bits:
1) Keyboard is a little small, but better in quality and feel than a Blackberry
2) Screen isn't a high resolution jobbie - Blackberry Bold is better
3) Radio antenna is easily covered by hand or other objects - drops signal too easily
My wife has an iPhone and its a good phone, but as a business tool the E71 is way better. I used to have a HTC slide out thingy which was good, but that was one of the fastest Windows Mobiles on the market and its WAY slower than the E71. So much so, a couple of my colleagues with the HTC phone are getting very bored with them - far too slow and need regular reboots to keep them running fast. The iPhone is good but data calls eat the battery far too fast and the GPS takes an age to lock on (unlike the very latest generation in the E71 and other new phones).
E71 IS a good phone and it has scored extremely well in pretty much all of the reviews you will find online. But its not a perfect music, video or game player. If you want that, get an iPhone.

Do Blackberry's need special contracts, or can they be used on a 'normal' phone contract?

Do Blackberry's need special contracts, or can they be used on a 'normal' phone contract?
iPhone with exchange linked into groupwise is the way to go

Depends. I found this one out myself. If you have a BES (Blackberry Enterprise server) for your corporate email like Microsoft Exchange, then yes, you do need to pay extra to 'enable the enterprise' functionality. If you are going to use BIS (Blackberry Internet services - or whatever) for your own personal email service from Google, Yahoo or who-ever, then no, you do not need to pay for this.Vodafone wanted 30 quid a month to enable the BES functionality. I told them to shove it and went with the E71. Sounds like a bloody big con to me.
