Day trip into France - Suggestions

Afternoon all,

Going to take the in-laws early Feb over to Calais to stock up on some wine. I was thinking of making the day of it so fancied a nice trip out somewhere, have been to Bruges in the past and loved it.

Any suggestions for a nice place to visit about an hours drive from Calais?

St. Omer (sp?) was nice about 15 years ago on a school trip.

Seriously lol... it was pretty and had nice parks and architecture.

St Omer is nice and the V2 bunker at Eperleques is worth a visit.

It was cheaper for me to buy German beer in Majestic, than in Germany 30 miles away from the brewery

Get some crepes and smoothies around the square and cool beer in the evening around the scaffolding

I heard that Cite Europe was deserted the weekend before xmas - normally you can't park there for that weekend!

The coast road down to Boulogne is quite scenic and Boulogne is a nicer town than Calais for wandering about. Le Touquet is nice in the summer further down the coast.

It's mostly pretty cold and windswept at this time of year though so you'd probably be better off going to do your shopping and then having a nice leisurely meal, these restaurants are the best in Calais Channel or Cote d'argent.

I'd second Le Touquet - lovely atmosphere and history. The town next to it, Etaples, was the location of the holding hospital for the soldiers who had 'copped a Blighty' in WWI - although they called it Eat Apples.

Along the coast road from Calais are a few of the German defensive gun emplacements which have been opened up as museums.

Whenever I'm in Northern France I can never not think about the fairly recent history of the place and once you get off the beaten track you can still imagine coming across a column of Shermans and Matadors.

Thanks for the suggestions...might give St.Omer a try ;-)

Still some bargains to be had if you shop about, but have to admit it's not really about saving money as we don't buy much booze anyhow.
