Ryan Air - Checking in a bag on the way back

Right, as a punishment for something horribly wrong I must have done in a past life I will be flying with this delightful company in a couple of weeks time. As it is only a quick 2 night break we are/were planning only to take carry on luggage and booked as such.
Then we remembered that not only would this mean that we won’t be able to bring back some of the local grog (can live with that, even though it would have been nice) but that Coughing Nails (cigarettes) are (certainly were 3 years ago) seriously cheaper over there (Portugal).
Which way would you think best to deal with this. Option A is on landing to go straight to the desk and pay the extra and so on there for the bag we will have to check in on the way back. Option B is to just get to the Airport an hour earlier than normal and to sort it out then and there. Option C is where you lot tell us they are going to sting us for a flight full fare plus bag charge and we tell them where they can load the bag…
Any one had experience of this and know what else we are likely to have to stump up other than the £12 per bag fee I seem to remember they charge.

think you can amend your booking online? the saving would have to be pretty big to justify the fees though, as you are stung for a check in fee as well as the bag carriage. It'll be at least 30 quid ISTR. If it's fags you are bringing back it would be better just to tie a couple of sweaters round your waste and stuff your coat pockets to free up carry on bag space.....

I went over to Vilamora for two nights, mid December, flying with Ryanair from Liverpool. I did exactly what you are intending, just took a small case to take on as hand luggage. I was just the right maximum size, & maximum weight of 10kg. When I boarded, & put my case in the overhead locker, there were other people who had bags twice the permitted size! The aircraft was full, but mainly Portugese families who had been over here shopping. With regards to cigarettes, I checked the price, & they work out at around £37 for 200, assuming 1Euro = £1, a massive increase on the £14 I paid a few years ago!!!
You may be in for a shock, because everything is more expensive than it is in the UK, .... a reasonable meal, with wine = £50 per head, litre of unleaded well over a pound, unfortunately it is generally far more expensive than here, ... I would say by 10% to 20%.
Lastly, beware of the food & drink prices onboard the aircraft, Ryanscare have just come out tops for charging in a survey, I paid £12 for 2 small bottles of larger, and a sachet ( size of a sugar sachet ) of Scotch, realistically £3 maximum from a supermarket!!! Also be prepared for ridiculous bureaucracy at the security check, especially with liquids, check their website, and follow the requirements to a TEE, some of my friends had toothpaste, deodorant, & a brand new bottle of Fahrenheit after shave taken off them, just because they weren't in a see through plastic bag!!!

On a Ryanair flight back from Spain I was supposed to have hand luggage only but also had the idea of bringing back some local produce. Had to check the bag in.
Walked up to desk with passport etc gave them bag they checked it in gave me boarding pass and off we went! Got away with the charges completely. Might be worth a go?!

Buy your tabs at the airport, then you can just carry them on in a plastic bag. Same with booze. Carry on luggage is unfortunately only what you actually check in with, everything you buy you can take on the plane.
Word of caution though - if you're going for the weekend (and I'm assuming you're not some kind of soap dodging tree hugger) then you and your OH will probably be taking toiletries. Make sure these all comply with the relevant restrictions otherwise they will be taken off you. You can either take small amounts (size of bottle, not quantity left in it) and only up to 1 small clear plastic bag each, or buy it air-side before you fly out.

The sizes of the suitcases (cos that's what they were) that people were allowed to carry on as hand luggage was ridiculous - 10kg! If even half the passengers did that the racks would be full.

t who was going up and down the plane with his huge suitcase and he couldn't find anywhere to put it - he was complaining out loud to the stewardess and anyone else who would listen asking why people had taken up all the locker space with coats. I called him a wker to his face which made a lot of people smile.

That's exactly what the airport operators want you to do. They'll restrict what you can take through security for 'safety' reasons and hope it will force you to buy their overpriced garbage in the 'tax free' areas. HTH
Best thing to do is not spend a single penny at the airport and buy anything you need when you arrive at the other end.

That's why it's still costs less in most cases to fly with someone like BA. You'll also fly to Milan not Bergamo. I’ve shared flights with more than a few of the micky takers over the years. Nothing like standing in security after you have had to prove your bag fits into the basket to the check in staff to spot that the 4’0” girl in front with 2 laptops, handbag the size of a rucksack and fully expanded flight bag is on the same (el cheapo) flight… Englishness prevents me from joining them.
Got all the ‘right’ volume toiletries and so on, it’s just that it had dawned on us that if you are going to Porto you might want to bring back a few bottles (which of course can only travel in checked baggage) and not want to get reemed at the airport. Sounds like airport prices might work out cheaper given the apparent price rises since I went to Estoril.

although everything has it's place. Went to Eindhoven last year for a similar trip and there was no way we could have done it any cheaper. This time though it didn't fully dawn on us until after booking that, of course, we wouldn't be able to bring any Port home with us as it would be in more than a 100ml bottle and that makes you a terrorist.

They want £29.99 to book a flight one way (plus taxes) for one person. Yet if you want to book for more than one person, that'll be £39.99 for the same journey. Each.
I could always call their customer helpline, but given what the call will cost and knowing that they won't care, it's easier to pay the tenner..
