Flexible working for parents!

My old job had a policy of flexible working (to a certain extent) in so far that you had to be at work for 8.5 hrs a day (including lunch) between 8am and 5:30pm. Because of my commute I use to get in at 8am and piss off home at 4:30. Saved a lot of sitting in traffic jams.

My new job however only allows this kind of flexible working for parents. One person gets in at 8 (as I do because sitting at my desk beats sitting in traffic), has half an hour for lunch and buggers off at 4pm! However, because I don't have kids yet I am apparently not allowed to have any kind of work life balance and must stay until 5:30!

I'm not having a moan at the parents who opt to work flexibly, fair play. What gets my blood boiling is this assumption that because I am childless I have no life outside of work and therefore am not entitled to a work life balance. I know it's not the end of the world but it winds me up watching these women fk off home early whilst I don't have the option.

Just to add, I did know there was no flexible working arrangement when I took the job but didn't realise mummys and daddys had the option. If they can work flexibly then why can't the whole company.

I wonder what kind of a difference flexible working across the country would have on the traffic chaos we currently face at rush hour. Early birds on the road at 7am and 4pm, late risers on the road at 10am and 7pm?? Might make a difference?

Not a legally protected group, open season on the childless.

Interesting to see what people's contracts say. If they are the same and they don't allow you to do whatthey do there could be a constructive dismissal?

A subject that really does boil my ps!

My wife was told by her boss in her previous job that because she didn't have any children she wasn't allowed to book holidays during school holiday time. Only employees with kids were allowed to do that....

....even though her husband is a college lecturer!

Great Idea. I used to come in at 7:30 and be gone at 4:00 ish. Useful, very useful. You could work pretty much any hours you wanted and there were some who would come in much earlier and be gone by 1pm. As long as you got the job done, nothing was said.

not winding me up, i dont smoke...

I just find non-smokers complaining funny, as if they are hard at it for every minute of their working day
