I buy and sell a fair bit on Ebay / forums varying from a few quid to a few thousand.

I am aware of Paypals chargebacks and from what I can see they are unaviodable because if the person pays Paypal with a credit card then asks the credit card co. to claim the money back, they seem to take it back no matter what.

I have prefered to take bank transfers for this reason but they aren't really safe either.

Apart from sending cash via Special Delivery (which most buyers wouldn't accept) is there a safe way to accept payment ?

Thanks

How about a seperate account just for payments in? Can then move money out to your main account whenever anything gets paid in?

If you are distance selling, you're stuffed !
The only safe way, would be to drive to the buyers home, and check the notes they give you one by one.

All I can say is, try to factor it into your costs.
Not much help I know.

Why so? Although if you mean outside the UK then I take your point.

With the faster BACS payment service the money could be in your account within minutes and it can't be reclaimed!

Fair shout, but my understanding is the OP some sort of distance trader?
Getting someone to BACS the dough might be as difficult?
What sort of amounts are we talking about?

Edit to add:
CHAPS is the same day service, and is usually bloody expensive.

BACS isn't instant IIRC?? As Phil says there is no 100% safe way. Pay Pal & Google Checkout do a pretty good job IMO.

Online banks transfers are free and pretty much instant these days but bank payments can be withdrawn... I asked when a payment was definately cleared and couldn't be withdrawn as I sold some wheels to a guy in Poland and I had the reply that it is never 100% certain.

Paypal is FAR worse, the credit card co.s withhold payment and paypal comes back to you.

The reason that spurred this post is that a customer checked the wrong box on Paypal intending to pay by C Card but actually paid by bank account.

The payment has been in my account for 4 days, normally I'd have sent the item out (a £1000 supercharger kit but we're still discussing the extra items he wanted) his bank told him:

"No problem we'll just withdraw the payment"

He then called me to tell me what was happening.

Whilst in this case there is no problem I find it a bit worrying.

Faster payments system is pretty much farked as far as I've seen - even having checked that sending and receiving banks are taking part, and the transfer I was making (A&L Bank to A&L credit card, which is really MBNA) was within the limits that they set - it still took 6 working days for my payment to reach the account - incurring late payment and interest charges.

Still to be refunded, and you notice that the transfer took longer than "normal" - which in itself probably indicates an "issue" of some sort.
Still waiting for A&L and MBNA to respond though....

Have also had transfers take minutes, hours or days - again all between participating banks.

Western Union is safe for receiving, you get sent a code, pop into your local WU place, which are quite common in newsagents, and claim the money as cash.

That's why it was so popular with scammers, as once they took the money, they can just walk out of the shop and disappear.

However, WU isn't free - it costs £14 to send £100
Also I wouldn't pay for anything bought online via WU due to aforementioned scammers..
