Any plumbers / heating experts out there? HW cylinder.

Having problems with my old bachelor pad, which is now let out and at distance from home. I've just had a quote for replacing the hot water cylinder, but the whole thing is confusing and st:

1. The symptom that was investigated was that there was/is condensation on the outside of the hot water cylinder, the diagnosis was that the cylinder was 'furred up' and needs replacing. Why would 'furring up' cause condensation on the outside of the cylinder, and why a replacement required? And why would it be 'urgent'?

2. The quote is, apparently, so due to the 'layout of the flat' which, amongst other things means that a cylinder of exactly the same time must be fitted, which in turn is a special order. Nothing I know about the flat (small, one bed) suggests this, and little detail has been forthcoming.

3. Add to this the fact the quote has not been itemised at all, and just a total figure given, and I'm starting to get worried that I'm being taken for a mug. May all be kosher, but I just don't know.

I'm and not a little bit , so any advice or thoughts gratefully received.

What are the dimensions of cylinder ? What the estimate ?

1) For the outside to have condensation on it must either be leaking or the water is so cold inside the cylinder. A furred up cylinder will not make it wet on the outside.

With regard to the quote why not get a second plumber round to quote and see what they say?.

I'm going to have to, I think. Nothing seems to add up and it's all a bit cagey for my liking. It could be ok, but if so then why the lack of info, detail in the quote etc?

As it's a flat then maybe it's one of those combined things with a cold water header tank on top? That could have condensation on it but then the furred up bit doesn't make sense.

It dose if it is a fortec, as the vents scale and stop the flow of hot water. quite easy to solve.
