Buy Cheap - Buy Twice...?

Watching the breakfast news this morning, there is a section highilghting the quality issues on buying cheaper clothes and goods from the cheaper shops during the recesion...
This follows a section a couple of weeks ago, highlighting the fantastic savings to be had in the new fad for cheap stores..
They are now saying that the quality is poor, can be used or worn a couple of times then has to be thrown away... so Don't buy it.
What sort of advice is that..? A load of COCK.
Anybody in their right mind knows the philosophy.. 'Buy Cheap Buy Twice'
On a petrolhead theme.. Socket sets, spanners, general workshop tools, Oil, wipers, after market replacement parts to name a few..
I know we are all feeling the strain, but buying the cheap stuff manufactured in backstreet factories in the Far East doesn't help anyone except the importers and other economies.

Edit - For Carpies benefit - within the space of 2 weeks BBC are giving 2 differing bits of advice to consumers with their so called experts - hence 'A load of cock'

Yep, but there are those who cannot afford to buy expensive stuff, so will always buy cheap and often.....False economy, but if you don't have the money in the first place.. For example, I have a friend who buys those cheapo cutlery sets on rack type things where the forks bend within a week of use. He seems to replace them a fair bit. We bought one fairly expensive set and have used the same ones for 7 years now.

Ahh, the old "trough and trowel". Nice. The main problem here is that people aren't prepared to wait. They want instant gratification. They want their new clothes NOW GOD DAMN IT! They could easily wait, save up, buy something decent. But Primark is always there, luring them in with its shoddily made tat.

I work for a division of a fairly well known German manufacturer of quality handtools (screwdrivers, ratchets, torque wrenches etc). In Europe, South Africa, South America and parts of the far east, nobody will buy anything else. Here in the UK its always "oh your stuff is so expensive - I can get a tool just like that from halfords for a 1/3 of the price...". Yup and then you have to buy a 2nd one and a 3rd then within the next year or you could buy ours and pass it onto your grandchildren.
Frankly our stuff is the best out there as proven by the fact that my dad gave me his old set of spanners by this brand which he bought 40 years ago, and even after being a lorry mechanic for many years they're as good as new..
But there's a lot of cheapskates here in the uk. Usually in the position immediately senior where you work.

True, price and quality are not inextricably linked. I've found 'fashion' to be the main counter to this and, since buying a Boss shirt years ago, which literally came apart at the seams on the first wearing, I've avoided 'bling' brands at all costs.My golden rules:
- Suits are now from Callaghan Tailor's in Brum.
- Shoes from Churches.
Quality, to non-engineers, is taken for granted, but in fact even the best in any field will produce the odd duffer. The most unreliable car I've ever had - even including my first two crash-and-forget Ford Fiesta bangers? A Toyota Landcruiser Amazon.

Good builders or Quality tradesman at work, not only do they have the skills that any DIY'er would die for, but they generally have the right equipment at the right quality.
Difficult Tasks for the DIY enthusiats with DIY tools, are turned into simple jobs for the guys with the best equipment. Taking half the time with better results.
