Restaurant in Edinburgh...

Following on from my..."I am a bellend and let the cat out of the bag about a Valentine's trip to Edinburgh" thread...I have decided to carry on with 'Plan A' and have now got the flights and hotel (The George) booked.

I'm pretty set on the activities for the weekend (unless they fall through, in which case I'll be back) but I'm stuck for a restaurant.
The Kitchin was recommended by a few sites but they're fully booked for the evening of the 14th as, I'm guessing, most places will be if I don't act fast!?

I'd be grateful for your suggestions of somewhere decent to take the wee lassie, the only real restriction being, she's not a fan of sea food or poncy candle lit "Valentine's" affairs where people look like they're having their arm twisted to look like they're in love! (Good girl!)

Certainly not poncy, though I don't know whether you'd consider it a little too informal for your special occasion. Food is great though.

I've always found The Outsider to be good and it's sister restuarant The Apartment isn't bad either, alternatively if you want to spend a bit more The Witchery is excellent.... as you say booking for Valentines when it's a Saturday might prove tricky, which reminds me..DOH!

Some really nice places down in Leith. Try the Shore, Fishers or the Waterfront. Skippers is probably the best seafood restaurant in Edinburgh, but they only do fish. The others are normal bistros, with a good atmosphere. The area has changed a lot over the last 20 years (no prostitutes, no flashing red/green/blue P38 light bulbs, no renting rooms by the hour and putting deposits on sheets etc) and it's quite pleasant to walk around at night now. Royal Yacht is based down there too.

Flannigans and Liquid Rooms trashed as well (although the latter is more due to water damage).

OP - if you like Thai, Time4Thai is just up the road from your hotel (nice choice by the way) on North Castle St. If you're set on Indian, then Britannia Spice down in Leith is good, but not cheap.

Olorosso, also on George St, is fantastic but pricey (great rooftop restaurant with cracking views of the city). The Overlook on George IV bridge also has great views and is a good Italian.

Have a peruse through the Scotland forum, the question of restaurants comes up quite a bit

Actually the chef at Olorosso (Tony Singh) has just started something with the chap who runs The Circus. I'll see if I can dig out the info.

I always preferred the food at Viva Mexico tbh. But yes, I remember that place but not its name for a good atmosphere.
