I often watch University Challenge, and am appalled by the subjects that some of the contestants are studying. Latin, History, Film Studies etc etc. Can someone comfort me by telling me that not one penny of my taxes goes to support these tts in their endeavours?

It's the ones who don't get on to University Challenge that are doing Surfing Studies and the like that concern me more.

Paying more attention to history might have convinced Hitler you can't march from germany to moscow before the winter sets in.

Ummm Latin is used by Doctors, herbologists and science generally. Film studies is very similar to english literature and comes under the same scope as art. History is a no brainer, of course it's a proper subject.

My degree is inthe equally stupid Public Relations (learnt more in two days work experience than in four doing the course).

Though there are a few worse...

Events Management (PR without the 'Theory')
Video Games
Asphalting
and I believe I heard of one in Bravery

Those are just more riduculous courses, their existence doesn't stop the ones I cited from being ridiculous. Although, come to think of it, Pig Management and Scriptwriting would seem to have commercial applications and so perhaps should not be included

Not sure there's much wrong with Latin, History or Psychology. Useful subjects that'll lead to useful careers.

Nothing wrong with pig management either. Probably not really a degree level subject but no less worthy for all that.

Such Latin as is needed can be taught during the courses you refer to, I'm talking about it as an independant subject. Film studies, English Literature are both time wastes. "History is a no brainer"? What does that mean?

Yes.
Why?
Because it has no practical application.
